Well, the 1st Annual North County Board Meeting Golf Tournament was a success I must say. How could it not be? 50 golfers from around North County played hooky on a Friday in 80 degree weather, drank free beer from The McDaniel Firm, put down some sandwiches from Board & Brew, ‘donated’ a few balls to the canyons of Goat Hill Park, and we did it all for a good cause in generating over $2500 for TERi in Oceanside which is ‘Changing the way the world views and helps children and adults touched by special needs’. Even if you weren’t a golfer (which was the case for most of us surfers), it was good to get outside, network, and help TERi. And seriously- if you could sugarcoat this as ‘working’- it was a no brainer.

Check in was 7 AM and golfers received swag from Wheat Accessories and Puma, Loud Headphones, golf balls, snacks, etc. After emcee Michael Glenn from presenting sponsor Printsmith Solutions said a few words to the crowd, Vicki, Lauren, and David from Goat Hill Park led the carts down the paths and the 7:45 shotgun start. And then it went all downhill from there. And then uphill. And back downhill. And well, if you’ve played Goat Hill Park, you know what I mean. Hole sponsors included:

  • John Ashworth from Linksoul
  • Dana Albert from Merrill Lynch
  • Marcelo Bengoechea from SUPERbrand
  • Rodrigo Oliva from Amerprise Financial Services, Inc.
  • Melissa Marquardt from Broadpoint Properties
  • Shawn Doan from The Doan Law Firm
  • Todd Regan from TPC HR/Payroll
  • TJ Smith from Printsmith Solutions
  • Ian McDaniel from The McDaniel Firm
  • Eric Hanscom from Intercontinental IP
  • Daniel Knoke from Lee & Associates
  • Scott Yates from Silvergate Bank
  • Jonathan Hanwit from thinkPARALLAX

Most everyone finished up around lunch time and it was back to the clubhouse to find out who had the lowest team score. Turns out it was 16 under by Dana Albert, David Emerick, Tom Burns, and Mike Battin who won custom trophies made of tinted surfboard resin from SUPERbrand. Once everyone was settled, we heard a word from Greg Voisen at TERi Inc., had some Board & Brew, and then the all-important raffle. Prizes included:

  • Apparel from Linksoul
  • Earbuds and shades from SPY
  • 83 Degrees gift certificate from TPC
  • Apparel from SUPERbrand
  • Puma golf bag from Wheat Accessories
  • A chair made of skate decks from artist Scott Holmen
  • Footwear from Sanuk
  • Loud Headphones
  • Gift certificate from Pizzacota
  • 2 tickets to the Kick Off Party for the La Jolla Festival of the Arts at Bird’s Surf Shed from Silvergate Bank

By the time 3 PM rolled around, it was time to call it a day, but not before we put our name down to do it again in 2016. Thanks again everyone for the support and make sure to find out more about TERi at  http://teriinc.org.

The surfing/golf connection is a strong one. If you strip it down to the basics, the appeal of surfing is being surrounded by nature in a beautiful setting. Ditto for golf. It’s also great to paddle out with your buddies and heckle each other when you bog a turn. Ditto for golf. Doing a big cutback or blowing your fins out the back would be like hitting a long drive or draining a 20 foot putt. And having a board quiver in your garage is akin to having some fresh clubs in your golf bag. The only real difference between the two is that you can have a cold beer on the golf course. Need to figure that one out for surfing. Maybe we can outfit the back of jetskis with coolers? And if you didn’t see the Pebble Beach pro-am a few months ago, our very own Kelly Slater was

in the lead going into the 3rd day. Kills me. Seriously, what can’t that guy do?! And if you’re destined to visit grandma over the summer and she DOESN’T live near the beach, it’s best to take a set of golf clubs with you to pass the time. Anyway, I’m getting away from the big picture here.

The purpose of the North County Board Meeting is to get business people together to network, grow local business, give back to the community, and most importantly, surf. All kidding aside, the most important thing is to give back. We’ve been fortunate to call north county San Diego home and there’s no other place I’d rather be. So now it’s time for me to give back. The North County Board Meeting is having their 1st annual golf tournament on Friday, April 17th and we’d like you to join us in supporting TERi, a facility in Oceanside which is ‘Changing the way the world views and helps children and adults touched by special needs’. They do incredible work at TERi in helping people every day through programs such as art, sports, music, and many other activities. But they need our- and your- help. That’s where the golf tournament comes in.

For just $60, you get to spend a Friday afternoon away from the office, meet up with friends, and did I mention lunch was included? Part of the proceeds will support TERi and we have even have hole sponsorships if you’d like to help further. Or maybe donate a raffle prize. Or maybe just have a cold one. Regardless, it’s for a good cause, and I wasn’t much of a fan of working on Fridays anyway. We’re having it at Goat Hill Park in Oceanside on Friday, April 17th. For those of you not familiar with Goat Hill, it’s a former city golf course that was given new life by local John Ashworth (for you golf fans, yes that’s Ashworth of Ashworth/Linksoul golf apparel fame. Or for you surfers, it’s Ashworth who also did Quiksilver’s Fidra apparel line. Now you’re starting to see the golf/surf connection here…). We only have a few spots left to play as well as a couple hole sponsorships left, so if you’d like to be part of this worthy endeavor, check out the flier attached to this story or reach out tonorthcountysurf@cox.net for more information.

Thank you for your support.

Just a reminder the next Surf Meeting is this Friday, Halloween! Couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the holiday weekend then getting some waves, growing your business, learn about our community involvement, and grab some breakfast. It will be at George’s again, just south of the Chart House in Cardiff, 6:30-8:30AM. Look for the green tent. And in the spirit of Halloween, don’t wear a costume (leave that to the groms) but wear your funniest t-shirt. Prizes will be given out.

See you soon!

Venue George’s just south of the Chart House in Cardiff
Starts Fri Oct 31 2014, 6:30am PDT
Ends Fri Oct 31 2014, 8:30am PDT

Looking for an excuse to get out in the water but that thing called ‘work’ is holding you back? Then why not attend a NCBM ‘Surf Meeting’ and kill 2 birds with 1 stone? Meeting once a month at a beach near you, members of the group get together from 6:30-8:30 AM to network, grab some breakfast, and maybe get a barrel or two. The only people complaining back at the office are the ones who didn’t get any surf that morning. We’ve had 3 great meetings so far:

-Our first meeting in June at George’s. Lots of fun clean waves and the occasional 4’ ray sighting.

-July at Pipes with a building SW swell and a couple peak to ourselves. Didn’t hurt the water was 72 also.

-And the most recent one- back to the well at George’s- just this past August which included a visit from Hurricane Marie and tubes-a-plenty. Going to be hard to top that meeting.

We’ve also had demo boards thanks to SUPERbrand. So if your board has felt sluggish lately, here’s the perfect opportunity to try out a new shape- as well as network of course to grow your business.

Thanks to all the members who have participated and we hope to see you at the next one this October!

The North County Board Meeting is proud to sponsor ‘Toast the End of Summer 17’ benefitting the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. Before the NC Board Meeting existed, there was a group of north county businessmen/surfers that would hole an annual party to close out the end of summer. Over the years the event has grown to benefit local charities and this year it will be the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. This 400-acre lagoon is home to a wide array of flora and fauna and invites us to appreciate our water resources through such uses as a YMCA day camp, recreational boating, a mussel and oyster aquaculture facility, a white-sea bass hatchery, a power generating plant, the new desalination plant, and of course the beach at Tamarack where the lagoon rises and lowers with the tides. To help preserve the lagoon and all it’s resources, the North County Board Meeting and it’s members are raising money through a silent auction to help with it’s educational objectives. Sponsors of this year’s event include:

Saint Archer Brewing Company

Printsmith Solutions, Inc.

The Wheat Group

Solage Calistoga Resort

The McDaniel Firm

Joielala Photography

-Scott Holmen Designs

Z Customization

SUPERbrand Surfboards and Apparel

West Peak Insurance Solutions

Train With Bimala

Shaper Studios

thinkPARALLAX

In addition to the silent auction, the North County Board Meeting special event will include an outdoor movie, drinks, dinner, and of course networking. This year’s event sold out in record time so make sure to attend next year’s Toast the End of Summer event in September 2015!
